What Online Programs Are Available?

Because of the importance placed on practical training, there are no entirely online programs in hospitality management. Internships are a part of online degree programs and must be completed in person. Most other courses are available online and are presented asynchronously, so that you might access them at your convenience. However, there is a time frame in which you must complete a course.

What Will This Degree Do for Me?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that in order to enter the management-training program of a large, chain hotel, you may need to hold a bachelor's degree in hospitality or hotel management (www.bls.gov). The BLS goes on to state that at smaller hotels or those with fewer services, you may qualify for a management position with an associate's degree. Your chances for employment are enhanced if you also have some work experience in the industry.

What Is the Career Outlook?

Depending on your abilities, interests and specific curriculum, an associate's degree in hospitality management can prepare you for a position in lodging management, food service management or gaming management.

In 2014, the BLS projected that employment opportunities for food service managers would increase five percent from 2014-2024. Opportunities for lodging managers were projected to increase eight percent over the same time period.

The latest salary statistics are also from 2014. At that time, the BLS determined the mean annual wage for food service managers to be $48,560, while lodging managers earned $47,680. The mean annual salary for gaming managers came in at $67,310.
