What Kinds of Hotel Management Certificate and Certification Programs Are Available?

Many colleges and universities offer certificate programs in hotel or hospitality management at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Depending on the program, you'll need to complete 4-10 courses; it usually takes about one year to earn a certificate.

Professional hotel and lodging associations offer certifications to qualified individuals. Earning certification may lead to an increase in career opportunities. You could pursue the Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA) or Certified Hospitality Supervisor (CHS) credential offered through the American Hotel and Lodging Association's Educational Institute. Certification prerequisites include either a 2-year degree or six months of relevant work experience. You'll need to complete an exam in order to earn certification.

What Courses Will I Take?

Undergraduate certificate programs include classes like hospitality management, human resource oversight, event planning and hotel maintenance. You'll explore similar topics in a graduate certificate program; additional courses could include front office accounting, ethics in the hospitality industry, hotel business statistics and hospitality finance.

Individuals interested in pursuing a credential offered by the American Hotel and Lodging Association may have access to exam preparation materials. If you register for the CFDM certification exam, you'll receive a study guide that includes practice questions pertaining to check-out procedures, housekeeping management and revenue evaluation. If you're interested in the CHS designation, you can purchase a series of workbooks that cover CHS exam topics, like time management techniques and staff scheduling methods.

Can I Earn It Online?

Certificate programs in hotel management are available online; however, completion of an in-person internship may be required. Certification exams offered by the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute can also be completed online, but these tests must be taken under the supervision of a proctor.

What Can I Do After Graduation?

If you some experience in the hospitality industry, you might find work as a front office or general manager at a hotel or resort. Front office managers address customer complaints, assign rooms to guests and supervise staff members. General managers may oversee multiple departments, like housekeeping and maintenance.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of employed lodging managers was expected to increase by 4% from 2016-2026 (www.bls.gov). As of May 2018, the median annual wage for lodging managers was $53,390 .
