Making a difference in the world might seem like a difficult task. However, changing the way you think about things goes a long way in this world. Meaning, you can make a difference without donating money. Here's how.

10 Actions You Can Take to Improve the World

College students are often passionate about important causes but lack the means to support nonprofit organizations financially. Fortunately there are a number of other ways big-hearted students can provide for causes that are important to them.

1. Donate items you no longer use.

Many charities will accept gently-used goods you don't want, including furniture, computers, books, music and electronic equipment. The Salvation Army and Goodwill can even pick up items from your dorm or apartment.

2. Volunteer in the community.

Your time is valuable, and devoting it to an organization's mission represents a substantial contribution. Help clean up an area park, walk dogs at an animal shelter, serve food to the homeless or find another community need you can address.

3. Volunteer online.

You don't have to leave your house to volunteer. Increasingly organizations offer opportunities to make a difference online. You might help with data entry, translation, research or another task that a charity needs performed.

4. Utilize a personal talent.

If you can sew or knit you might make stuffed animals or quilts for hospital patients. Are you into technology? You could create a website for an organization that needs one. No matter what your talent may be there is likely a nonprofit that can benefit from it.

5. Participate in a fundraiser.

Nonprofits routinely hold fundraisers that provide opportunities for concerned individuals to contribute. Consider getting involved in a walk-a-thon, bake sale or another activity that can raise funds for a cause that you believe in.

6. Leverage your purchasing power.

When it comes to buying things, you almost always have a great deal of choice. Make a statement with how you spend your money, choosing not to buy products from companies with compromised ethics or questionable business practices.

7. Organize a public awareness campaign.

Is there an issue you're passionate about? Make your views known by engaging in a public awareness campaign on campus. Submit press releases to local news outlets. Organize a social media campaign. Ask peers to join you at rallies.

8. Contact decision-makers and other influential people.

Another way to help initiate positive change is by expressing your views on important issues to those in positions of power. Government officials, corporate representatives and community leaders can all benefit from your perspective.

9. Do good online.

The Internet features opportunities to make a difference with no more than a few clicks. There are search engines, games and one-click-a-day websites that give money to charities based on user participation. Be sure to research sites before supporting them.

10. Monitor your personal actions.

It's easy to look outward and find fault with the world. It's harder to be vigilant about our own attitudes and actions. Whether it's recycling, avoiding offensive speech or checking another habit, be conscientious of your own behavior to make the world better.

Maybe you'd also like to support a cause financially but don't have a lot of extra money. One way to save some cash is to buy things you need from websites that offer student discounts.
