Locating Scholarships Through Social Media

Searching for scholarships is so time consuming and stressful. Now you don't have to forgo Twitter and Facebook in order to do it! Check out these interesting and unexpected ways that you can use social media sites to save you money on college.

Twitter has become one of the most popular means of seeing what your friends and favorite celebrities have been doing lately. However, it can also help you get money for college. All you have to do is look for it. In the search bar near the top of your screen, search for '#scholarship' and you'll be likely to find companies and groups giving out scholarships and information. You might even find a list of different sites that fellow stressed out students have compiled.

But Twitter's uses don't stop there. You can put up a tweet, asking for people to point you in the right direction and include the tag '#scholarship' at the end. Friends of yours and perhaps even people offering scholarships will see you when they search and might give you a helping hand.

While you might be used to Facebook as a means of communicating with friends, it can also be a way for different groups to advertise their scholarship information or list financial aid resources. Search for the word 'scholarship' or something similar using the search bar. You'll end up having to sort through different pages and groups that may or may not be legitimate. Be sure to check into what they really are before you sign up to anything, or else you might end up accidentally spamming your friends' statuses with ads for a free iPad. If you'd rather just ask your friends, simply update your status to say that you're looking for financial aid information. It might be that they've been on this search in the past and have some resources to help you on your way.

Rather than having to search as much as the other sites mentioned here, Reddit has things set up for you. They have a full list of scholarship information available on a new subreddit. You can get there just by adding '/r/scholarships' to the end of their Web address. You can also perform a search of the site if you'd rather, for similar but not as well organized results. Make sure to check the comments on each of the scholarship posts, just in case someone is saying that the site is not legit or that the scholarship has been discontinued. It can be easy to fake things on the Internet, so just be careful about sending in any personal information without checking your facts first.

And you thought it was just for dancing cats and sports bloopers. It turns out that YouTube has uses beyond entertainment value. Sometimes they will post video ads for scholarships on the front page of the site, but more likely you'll have to search for them. What you'll find is two things. First, you'll find people advertising scholarship opportunities, which probably involve making a YouTube video and then replying to the one you just watched. The other thing you'll find is submissions for scholarships that other people have done in the past. Don't be too quick to disregard them. They can still help you in your financial aid search. Check to see what they're applying for and see if it's something you want to go after. You can also look for the winning videos from previous years to give yourself a good jumping off point.

There are some scholarships that are specifically for first-generation students.
