Finding the Right On-Campus Job for You

Flexibility. Proximity. Cash. These are some of the benefits of finding a job on your college campus. Just outside your classroom door, there are a number of part-time employment opportunities, one of which could be perfect for you. Read on to learn more.

Student Tutor

Do you enjoy helping others? Are you a clear communicator? If your major is in a popular subject area, such as English, math or a science, consider becoming a tutor. Student tutors are typically paid hourly and often can achieve an increase in pay with certain training and certification credentials. Applicants for this position may need to maintain a minimum GPA or have earned above average grades in subject-specific courses.

Resident Advisor or Assistant (RA)

If you're active on campus or have experience in a leadership role, consider becoming an RA. Working as a resident advisor offers a challenging yet fun way to earn free on-campus housing. Some schools may provide RAs with single room assignments as well as additional pay or meal stipends. RAs often act as counselors, event planners and policy enforcers. In addition, resident assistant positions allow students to develop their skills in active listening, communication and conflict management, qualities that look great on a resume.

On-Campus Aide or Assistant

If you work well independently but can also collaborate when needed, consider working as an assistant. This type of supportive role can provide you with an opportunity to work in a more quiet, intimate and relaxed environment. You may be able to find a position within your major's department, assisting your professors or working hands-on in labs related to your field of study, such as computers or science. Aide positions are also available through the school library. If you're good with computers, another option to consider is working with one of the on-campus administrative offices.

Service or Venue Worker

Do you enjoy interacting with the public? If so, think about working in a customer service role. You can look to your campus cafeteria, school coffee bar, athletic center or performing arts auditorium. This type of position may provide better opportunities to work in the early morning or in the evening.

Brand Ambassador

If you're a member of an academic club, social group or athletic team, consider working as a brand ambassador. Many reputable companies hire college students to promote their names on campus. This position provides a great way to gain real-world marketing experience before you even earn your degree. Remuneration varies by company and may include freebies, an hourly wage or a per-engagement fee.
