Learn about your undergraduate and graduate degree options in information security. Keep reading to learn more about education and certification options in information security, a career field that will require you to be up-to-date with the latest computer technology. Schools offering Computer Forensics degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Type of Information Security Degrees Are Offered?

You can choose from information security programs on the associate's, bachelor's and master's levels. If you're interested in entry-level positions or are attending college for the first time, an associate's or bachelor's degree may interest you. If your goal is a master's in information security, you may need prior experience, in addition to an undergraduate degree, for admission.

Some common degree titles include Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with a security specialist concentration or Master of Science in Information Security. If attending school on campus is difficult, many schools offer information security degree programs through distance learning. Online programs are offered at most degree levels.

Program Levels Associate's degree, bachelor's degree, master's degree
Common Courses Software and hardware installation and maintenance, designing security systems, assessing network security issues, cryptography, computer network history
Online Availability Programs are available online
Certification Options CompTIA Security+ and Cisco Certified Network Associate Security are available and may be part of a curriculum; other certifications can be pursued, depending on a student's specializations

What Will My Courses Be Like?

As an information or computer security student, you'll develop the skills and knowledge to design and maintain your company's security system. You'll also learn to assess the network for security issues, install appropriate security software and educate others about computer and network security. In addition to operating system basics, you'll learn all aspects of software and hardware installation and maintenance. Your curriculum will include coursework with lab sessions that provide you with hands-on learning. Your courses may cover the following topics:

  • History of computer networks
  • Hackers' tactics and strategies
  • Information security terminology
  • Secure coding techniques
  • Cryptography
  • Intrusion detection
  • Embedded processor systems
  • Ethics and legal investigations

Can I Earn The Degree Online?

Many schools offer information security degrees through distance learning. These online programs often are 100% Internet-based. Your courses likely will be delivered through a Web-based course management system, such as Blackboard.

Although you may have to log on at certain times for discussions, assignments and tests, you typically can learn at your own pace. All you need is a computer with Internet access and an e-mail account for correspondence. With continued study and commitment, you may be able to earn your online degree in the same time it would take you to complete a degree program on campus.

Will I Earn Certification Through My Degree Program?

Earning a degree in information security typically will not lead to certification, but it can help prepare you to take a certification exam. Some schools do incorporate certifications, such as CompTIA Security+ and Cisco Certified Network Associate Security, into their information security programs, but most certifications must be earned by taking an exam at a designated site. If, after earning your information security degree, you feel you need more preparation for certification exams, some schools offer courses or certificate programs.

There are many types of certifications you can earn, depending on your area of emphasis. The Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) is an example of a certification you may want to earn as an information security specialist. Another would be Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Although certification is not a guarantee of employment, it can be a testament to your knowledge in your area of specialty and your dedication to keeping up with the latest technology.
