What Information Systems Associate's Degree Programs Are Available?

In these programs, you can learn about the organization, communication, sorting, transmission and storage of digital data. Your program may have a heavy reliance working with various operating systems, constructing secure databases, maintaining efficiency and analyzing systems. Since there is a focus on hands-on experience working with complex systems and database management, you won't be able to find distance education programs for this field. Completion of these programs can award you with an Associate of Applied Science degree; it may take you up to two years to complete.

What Courses Can I Expect?

Your program can teach you to work with operating systems, including Linux, UNIX and Windows. Training in Visual Basic, C++ programming, Java and Cisco networking programs may also be required. You can expect to take courses in networking concepts, software engineering, operating systems, systems analysis, database design and project management. These programs may also require you to complete general education courses in mathematics, health sciences, English composition, economics, human relations and communications.

What Can I Do With My Education?

Since many careers in this field require graduation from a 4-year degree program, you may be interested in continuing your education by enrolling in a bachelor's degree program. Completing a bachelor's degree program may qualify you for a career as an information systems manager, software engineer or computer systems analyst. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that, although a bachelor's degree education may be recommended, graduating with an associate's degree may qualify you for an entry level position as a computer programmer or computer support specialist.

If you intend on working as a computer support specialist, you may be required to earn vendor certification as recognized consent to work with their product. For other information systems careers, vendor certification can serve as professional recognition.
