Read on to learn more about what the career entails and employment options. Schools offering International Public Health degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Degree Programs Are Available?

Program options vary depending on the school and whether international health is its own department. Very few schools offer a bachelor's degree program in international health, although these programs do exist. More commonly, degree programs are offered at the master's level, with some schools offering doctorate-level programs usually aimed toward professionals who practice or intend to practice in other countries.

Some schools offer international health as a concentration within Master of Public Health (MPH) degree programs. Others offer additional concentrations, such as disease, health systems, nutrition or social interactions. Some master's degrees are designed specifically for those who wish to work with the Peace Corps. Schools may offer undergraduate minors or graduate-level certificates in public health for those who do not wish to major in the discipline. Certificate programs may be available in areas such as HIV/AIDS, violence prevention or pediatric health.

Some medical schools may also offer global health training for their doctors, dentists or nurses, either as a concentration or a certificate program. Some courses may be available online, and often programs include the opportunity to work with international organizations or do field work in a foreign country.

What Is International Health?

International health, sometimes called global health, focuses on health across the world, specifically in developing countries. Many programs focus on disease reduction, health protection, education and cultural influences on health. At some schools, it is part of the public health department, but at others, it is a standalone department.

What Can I Do With My Degree?

A degree or concentration in international health prepares you for a career working to improve the conditions for those living in unhealthy conditions. You may work for a government agency, a relief organization or a research institution. You may travel often or be based in the U.S. Some skills learned in international health programs can be applied to domestic organizations.
