What Education Will I Need to Become a Kinesiotherapist?

Your educational process will involve three major steps. The American Kinesiotherapy Association, or AKTA, states that you must first complete a bachelor's degree program from a college or university accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Second, you have to log 1000 hours of internship in a clinical setting. Your internship can take place on or off campus as long as the setting is approved by the Committee on Accreditation of Education Programs for Kinesiotherapy (CoA-KT). Third, you take a registration exam to become a registered kinesiotherapist (RKT).

What Are the Requirements for Continuing Education?

AKTA requires you to participate in at least 12 contact hours of continuing education each year to maintain your good standing as an RKT.

A variety of different activities can fulfill these hours, including:

  • College coursework
  • Research
  • Published writing
  • Seminars and conferences

What Subjects Will I Study in My Education Program?

In addition to general education requirements in arts and sciences, you can expect a science-based curriculum centered on the human body and exercise. Course topics may include:

  • Physical education
  • Motor learning
  • Psychology, physiology
  • Patient management and assessment
  • Human anatomy
  • Kinesiology and biomechanics
  • Exercise physiology

What Are My Online Options?

No online degree programs in kinesiotherapy were accredited by CAAHEP as of 2012, so you will have to enroll in an on-campus program. However, a few schools offer related programs online that you could possibly use to augment your schedule. Your school will determine whether or not you will be able to transfer credits from an online course. You may take continuing education courses online once you have become an RKT.

What Can I Expect From a Career in Kinesiotherapy?

As a kinesiotherapist, you may work in a variety of settings to help others live healthy lives. You could find yourself in a hospital, heath center, sports facility, fitness club, school, rehabilitation center or Veteran's Administration hospital. You may decide to open a private consulting service, or you may elect to specialize in aquatic exercise therapy, prosthetics or another subspecialty.
