What Will My Degree Program Involve?

As of September 2011, only six schools offer CAAHEP-accredited kinesiotherapy programs. These schools offer bachelor's degrees in areas like kinesiology, human performance and adapted physical education with specialization or concentration areas in kinesiotherapy.

While pursing a bachelor's degree, you may take general education classes and electives that are unique to the kinesiotherapy program in which you are enrolled. For example, you may choose to complete electives in recreational kinesiotherapy, swimming or dance. However, core courses in the following areas are required by the AKTA to receive your RKT designation:

  • Psychology
  • Human anatomy and physiology
  • Kinesiology
  • Rehabilitation neurology
  • Statistics
  • Therapeutic exercise science
  • Administration
  • Motor skills control

What Is Kinesiotherapy?

Kinesiotherapy is the practice of using exercise science to help patients recover physically and psychologically from injury or illness. As a kinesiotherapist, you would perform assessment measures and develop exercise therapy programs to fit the needs of patients who have been referred to you by a physician or nurse practitioner.

How Can I Become Registered?

Rather than earning certification, aspiring kinesiotherapists can become registered through the American Kinesiotherapy Association (AKTA). According to the AKTA, you must hold a baccalaureate degree from a kinesiotherapy program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), have maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 in the required courses and completed a minimum of 1,000 clinical hours (www.akta.org). Once you meet all of these requirements, you can take a written examination offered by the AKTA. If you pass, you'll receive the designation of Registered Kinesiotherapist (RKT).

Can I Complete a Program Online?

You may complete some introductory general education courses through a school's distance learning department. However, you will not be able to earn an entire degree online.
