Schools offering Nursing degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Will I Study in an LPN to BSN Program?

Most LPN to BSN programs consist of lecture-based classes in addition to clinical training. You'll study nursing techniques like patient interviewing, health assessment, administration of medication and disease prevention. You'll also explore different branches of the nursing field, including mental health, maternal-infant and community health nursing.

Your clinical experiences will allow you to get out of the classroom and practice working with actual patients. Most LPN to BSN programs take four years to complete. Because prior training and experience in nursing are required for enrollment, some programs may be completed in 2-3 years.

Key Topics Discussed Mental health, health assessment, community health nursing, maternal-infant nursing, disease prevention
Prerequisites Completion of LPN training program and passing NCLEX-PN is required; some institutions may require certain prerequisite coursework and CPR certification
Learning Environment Traditional classroom and hybrid degree programs are available
Licensure_ Graduates can pursue licensure as registered nurses; requires passing the NCLEX-RN

Are There Any Prerequisites?

As you might expect, LPN to BSN programs require licensure as an LPN. You'll need to complete an LPN training program and take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) to receive your license. Some programs require specific prerequisite coursework, like anatomy, physiology or basic chemistry. Others may offer advanced standing based on courses you've already completed. You may need current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); in many cases, CPR certification may be earned while completing the program.

Are Online Options Available?

A significant portion of your education in an LPN to BSN program will consist of clinical training. For this reason, you won't find many degree options online. However, some schools offer online lecture-based courses in nursing theory and nursing principles that can be applied towards your degree. You'll need a computer with a high-speed Internet connection. These courses are often completed asynchronously - you won't have to attend lectures on a specific day or log-in at a certain time.

What Can I Do With This Degree?

A BSN might help you obtain an administrative role at a hospital or clinic. You could become a registered nurse by taking the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). If you'd like to become a clinical nurse specialist, nurse educator or nurse practitioner, you could apply to a master's degree program.
