Licensed Practical Nursing Courses

Get information on the types of classes that are available for those interested in licensed practical nursing. You'll find out about course content, where you can find these classes and how to apply.

What Could I Learn?

Training programs for licensed practical nurses (LPN) consist of related courses that teach you all of the skills necessary for licensure. In general, you could learn about the human body, basic medical techniques and nursing ethics. You can also look for licensed vocational nurse (LVN) training as this is essentially the same as LPN training, but the term is specific to licensing in the states of Texas and California. Here is a sample of courses you might take related to LPN and LVN training:

Fundamentals in Practical Nursing

An overview of the role of a practical nurse is the purpose of this course. Students may expect to learn the principles behind client care and the history of health care. Other topics might include caring for diverse clients such as aging populations and clients from different cultural backgrounds. Some courses may include labs to practice nursing skills.

Pharmacology for the LPN

Students in this course will learn the fundamentals of medication therapy. Topics covered typically include dosage calculation and administration of medicine, as well as the effects on the body. Also covered might be the concept of Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion (ADME) and patients' rights. This type of course may require labs to learn and demonstrate medication administration skills.

Health Assessment for the LPN

The focus of this course is to introduce the student to the skills needed to assess the patient. The legal role of the LPN may be discussed, as well as communication concepts necessary to obtain a health history. Theories on health promotion may be covered, as well as psychosocial and ethnocultural patient cohorts.

Psychosocial Nursing

An understanding of mental and behavioral disorders in patient populations is the aim of this course. Students might learn strategies on recognizing and communicating with patients who may have addictions, mental disorders, or be victims of violence. Further discussions may include psychotropic medications, nursing judgment, and the importance of teamwork and communication when dealing with psychosocial issues.

Capstone/Clinical for the LPN

This course integrates the classroom, lab and clinical environment so the student can apply the skills learned into patient care. Students may also review and prepare for licensing by covering the QSEN (Quality and Safety Education for Nurses) Core Competencies. Some courses may also cover the skills necessary to earn the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Licensed Practical Nurses).

Where Are Licensed Practical Nursing Courses Offered?

Courses in licensed practical nursing are usually offered as part of LPN training programs, which are usually certificate programs consisting of specialized courses that offer job-specific training. Nursing programs may prepare students for the NCLEX-PN exam. This course of study typically includes 40-50 credit hours, allowing you to graduate in a year or less. Some programs may have certain educational requirements for students, so you may need to earn a 2.0 grade point average to graduate. You can find these programs in full-time and part-time formats, and some are available online.

Many schools offer LPN-to-RN programs, allowing the student to use their skills to expand their knowledge and earn a BS. These 'bridge' programs give students a clear avenue towards furthering their nursing education.

What Are The Admissions Requirements?

While some programs may have specific admissions requirements, many will consider applicants with just a high school diploma. Programs with more competitive admission may require you to satisfy additional prerequisites, which could include passing an admission exam and completing college courses in English, math and science.
