What Is the Availability of MBA Programs That Do Not Require the GMAT?

There are a number of colleges and universities throughout the United States that offer MBA programs without including the GMAT as a prerequisite. Many of these are Executive MBA, or eMBA programs. On average, you can expect these programs to take two years of full-time study to complete, although accelerated programs can be finished in as little as one year. Part-time programs usually require 3-4 years to complete.

Specifics regarding the GMAT vary by school. Some programs waive the test on a case-by-case basis if you can prove you have a sufficient educational background or relevant work experience. Other schools request, but do not require, that you take the GMAT, and some programs allow you to take a remedial math class in lieu of the GMAT.

What is the Difference Between MBA and eMBA Programs?

Traditional MBA programs can be appropriate whether you have experience in the working world or not. Classes typically are offered during the day, although some programs offer evening and weekend courses. A broad selection of classes, including finance, management, accounting, economics, leadership, ethics and business law, usually is included in the curriculum.

In contrast, eMBA programs are designed for seasoned business professionals. Many schools have minimum work experience thresholds, ensuring that you've actively worked in your field for a certain number of years prior to enrolling. These programs are scheduled to accommodate busy work schedules, with classes held on weekends or evenings. Many eMBA programs focus heavily on leadership and management theories and principles, with some other business-related courses included.

What Are My Online Options?

There are hybrid and fully online MBA programs that don't require you to take the GMAT. At a minimum, you'll need a computer with Internet access for online learning; some programs may have additional software requirements. In general, you'll submit assignments, review lessons and take exams via the distance learning website of the school. You may utilize e-mail, online chat rooms and message boards to communicate with your professor and fellow classmates. Bear in mind that some schools require a portion of the curriculum to be completed in person, such as presenting a final project or attending colloquia.
