What Is an Online Bachelor's Degree in Managerial Accounting?

Managerial accounting is not typically a major offered in bachelor's degree programs. You're more likely to find bachelor's degree programs in accounting that include coursework in managerial accounting. An online bachelor's degree in accounting is a 4-year program taught entirely through the Internet. A degree program such as a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Business Management with a concentration in accounting can familiarize you with the theoretical and practical applications of both management and accounting. Skills you may develop throughout your program include auditing, financial analysis, budgeting, investigation and project management. Although you'll complete your coursework online, you may be able to participate in an on-site internship at a local business toward the end of the program.

What Courses Will I Take?

General education requirements comprise about half of the courses you would take in a 4-year program. Business courses you could take include economics, statistics, ethics, personnel management and finance law. Other areas of study may include:

  • Forensic accounting
  • Government accounting
  • Investing
  • Leadership
  • Financial planning

What Do These Programs Prepare Me For?

You could either pursue entry-level work as an accountant or further your education in a graduate program. Accountants can work in a variety of sectors, from government to corporate business to non-profit firms. Managerial accounting is one career path available if you have a bachelor's degree. Some of your responsibilities as a managerial accountant could include creating a budget, generating reports, analyzing performance and managing assets for a firm.

Another job title you might consider is Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Public accountants perform a broad range of duties, including audit, tax and advisement- related work. As a CPA, you could also become involved in forensic accounting, which involves investigating financial crimes, such as fraud and embezzlement. Licensing requirements for CPAs vary by state, but according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a bachelor's degree is typically the minimum requirement. Another option is to earn the Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) certification from the Association of Government Accountants. According to estimates made by the BLS, the median income for accountants and auditors was $70,500 in May of 2018.

If you're interested in pursuing an education beyond a bachelor's degree, you could pursue a master's degree, such a Master of Science (M.S.) in Accounting, and then enroll in a doctoral program, such as a Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A.) in Accounting. Doctoral programs take an intensive look into the practices of CPAs and financial managers and would prepare you for a career as a professor of researcher.
