What Will I Learn?

The most important skills you'll learn include sales, campaign development, advertising, pricing and public relations. You'll likely also learn product development, professional collaboration, promotion, marketing strategy and marketing research.

Programs teach you to put these skills together to perform the fundamental job of estimating the public demand for a company's product by analyzing its competition and its market sector. You'll then learn how to develop effective pricing strategies based on economic theory. You'll also learn how to track a target market and develop new products. Aspiring marketing managers often focus on collaboration techniques with advertising and promotions professionals.

What Kinds of Courses Will I Take?

Both bachelor's degree programs in marketing and programs in business usually require a core of courses including economics, statistics, principals of business and marketing basics. Coursework is primarily didactic, instead of hands-on, although most programs do incorporate collaborative projects or internships as parts of the curriculum. More specific classes might include:

  • Accounting
  • Finance
  • Consumer psychology
  • Sales management
  • Business law
  • Business policy

Are There Any Prerequisites?

Expect to submit standardized test scores, letters of recommendation and a personal statement to be considered for admission to bachelor's degree programs in either marketing or business administration. Also, if you want to prepare to be a strong applicant, economics, business, statistics and computer science are good classes to take in high school. Many business programs also favor applicants who have participated in extracurricular activities that exhibit leadership skills.

Is This Degree Available Online?

There are a variety of online marketing management programs available at the bachelor's level. Coursework in an online program is typically identical to coursework found in an on-campus program. You'll need a computer and high-speed Internet access, but no special software besides basic office word processing and spreadsheet programs. You'll access your coursework through the school's distance learning management system. Communication with teachers and fellow students is typically performed through online message boards, chat programs and instant messaging.

What Kind of Job Will I Be Able To Get?

With these degrees, you may be able to find work in sales, public relations, advertising, promotions or marketing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted that the employment rate of management positions in these professions would grow by 10% between 2016 and 2026, which is about as fast as average (www.bls.gov). Most of this growth would be due to increased competition in many markets.
