Are There Prerequisites For Obtaining a Master's Degree in International Public Health?

As with most other master's degree programs, there are several prerequisites for a master's in international public health program. Firstly, you should already have a bachelor's degree, preferably in public health or a related field. Some schools require health-related work experience; subsequently, many enrollees have clinical or research backgrounds. Most schools set minimum acceptable undergraduate GPAs, as well as minimum test scores on either the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Other requirements vary by program.

Classroom learning is coupled with hands-on laboratory exercises, with internships or field experiences required toward the end of the program. Some programs include a Peace Corps field experience, which involves volunteering in a country in need of public health workers. Common courses in a master's program in international public health may include:

  • Principles of health policy and management

Concentrations can include health policy, leadership, disease prevention, health metrics, epidemiology, infectious disease and oral public health. Dual-degree programs permit you to earn two degrees in less time than it would take to complete each one individually; examples combine a MPH with a Master of Science (M.S.), Master of Social Work (MSW), Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).
