Certificate programs often take one year to complete if you're enrolled full time, while associate degree programs last two years on average.

You'll receive hands-on instruction through internships, externships and clinical laboratories. Because of the need to complete clinical training onsite, you typically cannot study medical assisting online. Many programs prepare you to apply for certification with the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
