What Is Medical Management?

Medical or health care managers are in charge of the business and administrative sides of the industry. You may be in charge of an entire health care facility or a department within a larger facility, such as a hospital. You'll coordinate resources and staff, monitor efficiency and quality of care, check finances and direct day-to-day activities, depending on the size of the facility.

What Degree Options Are Available?

Many schools offer master's degrees in medical or health care management. Some medical management programs are aimed solely at people who are currently working as physicians or who already have advanced degrees. Some schools also offer graduate certificates for those who wish to gain additional knowledge in the administrative side of the business without getting a full degree.

Additionally, some schools are now offering bachelor's degrees in medical or health care management. Depending on the school, some or all of the courses may be offered online.

What Will I Learn?

A degree in medical or health care management often focuses on business subjects with an emphasis on how they relate to the medical industry. Courses you may take include accounting, management fundamentals, economics, ethics and law, operations, budgeting or health care delivery. Additionally, some programs divide the degree into technology or business concentrations.

What Can I Do With My Degree?

Some employers require master's degrees, but a bachelor's degree may be all that is required for assistant positions or for smaller facilities. You'll be qualified to work at a variety of medical facilities, such as hospitals, nursing homes, health care clinics, long-term care facilities and doctors' offices. Your specific duties will depend on what type of facility it is and what the administrative hierarchy is.

You may also be eligible to become certified. The Professional Association of Health Care Office Management (PAHCOM) offers a Certified Medical Manager (CMM) certification for its members who have at least three years of experience.
