Can I Get Montessori Teacher Training Online?

The Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), which developed the Montessori Method in 1929, states unequivocally that Montessori training cannot be done in a distance learning format due to the unique nature of the teaching method (www.amiusa.org). Teacher training is provided at centers that have been accredited by the AMI and typically involves extensive hands-on practice, lectures, student teaching, classroom monitoring and live demonstrations.

Training Montessori Method training, does not lead to state licensure
Common Courses Montessori philosophy, nutrition, sensory development

Licensure Available as add-on as part of a state-licensure education program

What Will I Learn?

At a Montessori training center, you'll be allowed to choose among three teaching specializations: infants, primary (children 3-6 years old) and elementary (children 6-12 years old). You'll be trained in Montessori teaching strategies, curriculum design and child development. The Montessori Method revolves around letting children learn at their own pace within a controlled educational environment. You'll learn how to encourage children to utilize their five senses during the learning process. You'll also learn how to organize and lead learning groups through specialized instructional programs. Upon completion of the training program, you'll be issued a diploma that will qualify you to work at a Montessori school. You will not earn a state-issued teacher's license through a Montessori training center.

What Courses Will I Take?

You'll take education courses that were developed to be age-appropriate for your specialization group. You'll also take courses in Montessori history, development and theories. Coursework for teachers can include:

  • Montessori philosophy
  • Language development
  • Nutrition
  • Child neuropsychiatry
  • Environment preparation
  • Sensory development

What Are The Prerequisites?

Most Montessori training programs require that you possess a bachelor's degree, although some programs may accept life or work experience in lieu of a degree. If you want to train for teaching at the elementary level, you'll also need a Montessori primary level diploma.

What If I Want To Earn a Teacher's License?

There are university teacher training programs that are affiliated with the AMI at the graduate level. Most programs are designed for those who already hold a teacher's license and wish to incorporate Montessori learning strategies into their teaching practices. These programs typically offer master's degrees or graduate certificates with a specialization in Montessori education.

However, a few universities offer combined programs that allow you to earn a Montessori diploma along with your teaching degree. Through one of these programs, you'll earn a master's degree in education that fulfills state licensure requirements and attend intensive training sessions in Montessori methods. A few of these programs offer some of the master's degree coursework online, although the Montessori training must be done in person.
