NOC Technician Training Programs

A network operations center (NOC) technician solves networking and computer system problems for a large organization. Find out what type of degree or professional training you'll need for this occupation, and learn about the typical job duties. Schools offering Computer Networking degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Does an NOC Technician Do?

As a NOC technician, you'd be part of a larger team that responds to networking, computer problems and similar issues within a large organization. Here's an example of what your job might be like:

First, a call describing a problem within your company's computer system is placed to the operations center, where you work. Your team will then log the incident and continue monitoring the progress made in solving the issue. The next step in the process is to send you or another NOC technician to diagnose the issue, isolate the problem and formulate a plan of action. Finally, your team will take the appropriate action to resolve the issue and make sure it doesn't reoccur in the future.

When you begin working as an NOC technician, you can expect to function as part of a team operating on an escalation hierarchy. You might begin working as a technician that accepts calls or e-mails from customers or users describing a technical issue. You might also help customers or users take initial steps to rule out what the problem is or attempt to resolve it. As you advance, you might work as one of a higher tier of NOC technicians, performing advanced troubleshooting, diagnostic and repair services.

Job Duties E-mail and call reception, customer support, troubleshooting, repair services, program diagnostics
Program Levels Associate's degree, bachelor's degree, work training program
Common Courses System design, system analysis, telecommunications, web design, customer service

How Can I Get Training?

In order to learn how to work with computer networks, troubleshoot issues and resolve networking problems, you can complete an associate's degree program in computer networking administration, networking technology or networking systems. If you're looking for a 4-year degree, you can complete a bachelor's degree program in computer information systems or technology management.

However, in its 2014-2024 Occupational Outlook Handbook the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that many computer support specialists received training through programs offered by their employers. You might also attend training sessions offered through a computer technology vendor.

What Can I Learn in a Degree Program?

Once you enroll in a degree program, you'll begin learning how to configure, install and manage a computer networking system. This includes designing a system, setting it up for management, modifying security settings and resolving any issues that arise. You'll also learn about systems analysis.

In addition, you'll be introduced to a variety of skills and knowledge employed by NOC technicians. These include the interpersonal skills required to make ethical decisions, provide customer service and comply with legal requirements in the information technology field. Technical coursework will cover Web development, programming, software tools, telecommunications and databases.
