What are the Prerequisites for Neonatal Nurse Practitioner School?

To qualify for a master's or doctoral program in nursing with a specialization in neonatal nurse practitioner, you must be a registered nurse and hold a bachelor's degree. Additionally, you may be required to have experience as an RN in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Schools often offer flexible scheduling, online coursework and a variety of clinical locations to accommodate students who work full- or part-time.

What Will My Program Prepare Me For?

A neonatal nurse practitioner program can prepare you to work with healthy babies, as well as those needing specialized care, in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics and NICUs. It also can prepare you to sit for the National Certification Corporation's Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) exam.

What Might My Coursework Be Like?

Since you likely already have extensive education and experience in nursing in general, your master's or doctoral program will focus on the specific care, diagnosis and treatment of infants. Courses might include:

  • Physiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Well-baby care
  • Neonatal health assessment
  • Pathophysiology
  • Family dynamics

In general, you'll participate in several supervised clinical practicum or internship experiences during your neonatal nurse practitioner program. You might have the opportunity to work in labor and delivery, newborn care or an intensive care unit.

What Would the Job Entail?

As a neonatal nurse practitioner, you would be able to diagnose conditions and prescribe medications; however, you would still work under a supervising physician. Based on your interests and abilities, you would work on one of three levels. Level one is the newborn nursery, where healthy infants receive care. Level two involves caring for babies who may be sick or premature and need extra supervision, and level three requires taking care of infants who are in intensive care due to life-threatening illnesses or chronic conditions
