What is a Nurse Anesthetist Degree Program?

A number of universities offer master's programs in nurse anesthesia through their departments or colleges of nursing. As a student in one of these programs, you can learn the techniques and protocols needed to administer anesthesia and monitor patients' vital signs during surgical procedures. Your coursework and training also should prepare you for the National Certification Examination (NCE) administered by the National Board On Certification and Recertification Of Nurse Anesthetists. If you pass, you'll become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

Do These Programs Have Prerequisites?

In general, you must posses a bachelor's degree in nursing, licensure as a registered nurse and one year of work experience to enter a nurse anesthetist master's degree program. You also may be required to submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT). In addition, you may need to undergo an interview and background check.

What Might I Study?

During your master's degree program in nurse anesthesia, your coursework may include instruction in anesthesia principles and procedures, chemistry, pathology, pharmacology and research methods. You also might take classes in statistics, nursing ethics and nursing law. Programs may have additional classroom training in areas such as obstetrical or pediatric anesthesia.

After completing the bulk of your coursework, you'll begin clinical rotations at a local healthcare center. You may be able to choose your site, depending on your program's guidelines. Rotations can last from one year to 16 months. You may observe and perform procedures in the following departments:

Can I Complete a Degree Program Online?

Some schools offer the option of online study to nurses who are already CRNAs. In these degree completion programs, you can access course content through recorded video lectures. However, some of these programs require you to meet on campus at least once during the semester.
