Nurse-Midwifery Degree Programs

Whether you're just starting out, are a nurse already or hold a bachelor's degree in an area other than nursing, earning an advanced degree in nurse-midwifery can put you into a career caring for women and children at various stages of life. Your duties could include delivering babies and providing primary care to women and children. Read on for program and career information. Schools offering Nursing degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Degree Programs Are Available to Me?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), nurse-midwives are one of four types of advanced-practice nurses who hold master's degrees. While earning your degree, you will learn about basic health practices for women and midwifery practices and procedures. Specific subjects include newborn care and delivery, life span development and obstetric care. If you are enrolled in a program that combines a nurse practitioner education with midwifery training, you'll learn about a variety of common health issues and practices to better assist you in family care. All nurse-midwifery programs require extensive clinical experience and training as well.

If you are a registered nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, you can enroll in a program leading to a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in nurse-midwifery. Programs can take from two to four years to complete. Be sure to check that the program and school are both accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (www.midwife.org).

There are also master's degree programs that accept candidates with a bachelor's degree in a field other than nursing. These programs, often referred to as 'direct entry', generally take three years to complete and provide an accelerated nursing education as part of the master's degree program. Other programs, often called 'bridge' programs, allow entry to those who do not have a bachelor's degree, as long as they possess an RN at the associate degree or diploma level.

Master's-level certificate programs are also available. These may be undertaken at the same time as a master's degree, or as additional education for nurses with a master's degree. Post-master's certificate programs can also be used as continuing education or professional development to pair with already existing degrees.

The highest level of education available to you as a nurse-midwife is the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Some schools offer distance learning programs, which require minimal classroom interaction. These programs last around five semesters, often center on the development of a project and involve at least twenty hours a week of clinical work.

Degree Levels Master's , post-master's certificate, doctoral
Distance Learning Distance learning programs in nurse midwifery are available, but in-person clinical hours are required
Licensing and Certification RN licensure required, CNM certification available

What About Licensing and Certification?

If you're not already an RN, you will need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses in order to be able to practice any kind of nursing, including nurse-midwifery. After earning your Master of Science degree in nurse-midwifery, you may become a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) through the American Midwifery Certification Board. This organization can also help you with continuing education. Although the face of midwifery is changing, as of February 2015, CNMs were legally authorized to practice nurse-midwifery in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

What Does a Nurse-Midwife Do?

The job of a nurse-midwife involves caring for women during every stage of life. Specific duties can include assisting in childbirth, providing family planning, prescribing medications, providing pre-natal care and giving exams. Some nurse-midwives are also nurse practitioners who provide primary care to the general population.
