What You Need to Know

Individuals interested in finding the right nursing program in Pennsylvania may choose between bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs. Baccalaureate degrees in nursing require four years of full-time study to complete; master's degree programs may be completed in two to three years; and doctorate degrees are awarded following one to three years, depending on the credentials of the student upon entering the program. Nursing degrees compound; students must hold a bachelor's degree in order to enter a master's or some doctoral programs. Other doctoral programs are open only to RNs already holding a master's degrees. Almost all of the nursing programs in Pennsylvania are offered by four-year, public schools. Most programs will include clinical experiences.

Bachelor's Degree Programs in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania State University

This program is available at the University Park campus located in central Pennsylvania. The curriculum includes coursework in biology, chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, psychology, social sciences and nursing practice. Graduation from this program qualifies you to take the NCLEX-RN.

Courses in this program cover topics like nursing informatics, nursing anatomy and physiology, life span development, pharmacology and nursing research. The program's curriculum includes clinical experiences, which begin during your second year of study, as well as time spent in the school's skills lab. A senior culminating course is also required. The school also offers an accelerated bachelor's degree program for students with a bachelor's degree in another field, as well as a program designed for licensed RNs in possession of an associate's degree or diploma, and seeking a bachelor's degree. The RN program also offers students early admission to the school's graduate programs.

The advanced nursing courses can prepare you to work as an advanced practice nurse, nursing educator or in a leadership position. You must also write a thesis or paper prior to graduation.

The Doctor of Philosophy program is research focused. In the program, you may conduct research on topics like consumer informatics, genetics applications, critical care patient recovery or the behavioral management of chronic disorders. Classes in the program include research methods, statistics, and the philosophy of science. You must write a dissertation prior to graduation.
