What You Need to Know

A diploma in nursing, which takes one to two years to complete for full-time students, leads to eligibility to take the certification exam to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN). Associate's degrees and bachelor's degrees qualify graduates to earn licensing as registered nurses (RNs).

Diplomas and associate's degrees are offered by two-year, public schools in New Hampshire; bachelor's degrees are available through both public and private, four-year schools. Admission requirements to all levels of nursing education programs may include a background check, drug screening, immunization records, physical exam, and/or current health insurance.

NHTI, Concord's Community College

Formerly known as the New Hampshire Technical Institute, NHTI is located in the capital city of Concord in the southern part of the state. NHTI offers a practical nursing program that is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and approved by the New Hampshire Board of Nursing. Admission to the program is competitive, but after successful completion of the program, you'll be prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) or continue on to an RN program.

NHTI, Concord's Community College

The NLNAC accredits NHTI's nursing degree program, and the New Hampshire Board of Nursing approves the program. You can enroll as a day student or as an LPN-RN advancement student. Admission to either program is based on grades and test scores and is highly competitive. Once enrolled, you'll take both clinical and classroom-based courses. Colby-Sawyer College

Colby-Sawyer College accepts students into the nursing program in their sophomore year. Acceptance is competitive and based on merit. The program has been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the New Hampshire Board of Nursing. You may take courses in nursing practice, pharmacology, healthcare research and NCLEX-RN preparation. Clinical rotations are also a key component of the program, with sophomores spending one day each week in a clinical setting and juniors and seniors spending two days a week in a clinical setting.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program includes foundation coursework in the humanities, social sciences and biological sciences. When you reach your senior year, you'll complete a capstone practicum in a clinical setting. The university also offers an honors program for exceptional students.
