Online Avionics Technician Training and Certification Programs

Online training programs aren't typically offered, but you can pursue on-campus training that can help prepare you for avionics technician certification and licensing exams. Learn more about these programs below. Schools offering Aviation Management degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Is Avionics Technician Training Available Online?

An avionics technician is a professional that works with aviation electronics, performing daily maintenance, testing and repair of computerized aircraft systems. These systems include everything from radio communications and navigation systems to weather radar systems. Unlike an aircraft mechanic, who deals more with such components as landing gear, engines, brakes and valves, avionics technicians spend most of their time working with computerized controls and solving complex electronic issues.

Due to the hands-on nature of the field and the specialized training required, avionics technician training programs aren't generally offered online. However, several schools offer on-campus training programs designed to prepare you to work in this field. Programs range in length from less than 1,500 clock hours to more than 2,100 hours and generally result in a certificate of completion.

What Will I Learn?

In an avionics technician training program, you'll study topics specific to the field of aviation, including aircraft blueprints and operations, but you'll also take general courses in physics, mathematics and aerodynamics. Most programs combine lectures with hands-on activities, group discussions and industry-relevant software. You'll also take a variety of courses designed to acquaint you with various aircraft electrical systems; course topics include these:

  • Solid-state circuits
  • Aircraft wiring practices
  • DC and AC circuits
  • Electrical safety
  • Soldering
  • Microprocessor systems
  • Linear circuits
  • Navigation systems

Do I Need Certification?

In most cases, avionics technicians are required to have certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Exceptions would be those who have military experience in avionics repair or those who have worked for avionics manufacturers. Technicians who work with communications equipment must also have a Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-granted restricted radio-telephone operator license.

Certificate programs for avionics technicians are designed to prepare you for a variety of certification and licensing exams, including FCC licensing, National Center for Aerospace and Transportation Technologies - Aircraft Electronics Technician (NCATT-AET) certification, and the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET) Certified Electronics Technician credential.

How Much Can I Earn?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), avionics technicians accounted for approximately 17,340 U.S. jobs in 2014 (www.bls.gov). The BLS also notes that employment for avionics technicians is expected to to increase only 1% between 2014 and 2024. In 2015, avionics technicians earned mean annual wages of $60,200, also per the BLS.
