Online Business Communication Courses

Explore what you'd learn in an online business communication course, which you could find offered at the certificate or associate's degree level. Find out how online courses work.

What Topics Are Covered in Online Business Communication Courses?

In online business communication courses, you'll learn how to write grants, letters, business proposals and reports that can help improve your customer service skills, investment options and employee relations. Some courses deal with making a business more globally compatible, as you learn to market and sell to customers around the world through effective communications. Others cover understanding verbal and nonverbal communications and developing good listening skills. Courses might include the following:

Business Communication

In business communication, being clear and to the point are key. This course may cover how to plan, prepare and write everything from business correspondence to resumes and oral reports.

Introduction to Public Relations Writing

In this course, you will become familiar with what is considered newsworthy and how to write press releases and email pitches. You will also find out the best ways to use social media and the internet to spread your company's news.

Technical Writing

The ability to create technical documents, including manuals, reports and journal articles, is growing in demand. Upon completion of this course, you will know how to organize and write a variety of technical publications.

Public Speaking

Business communication isn't limited to the written word. You may also need to give presentations in your career. This course will prepare you to speak in front of any audience effectively and with confidence.

Effective Emails, Memos and Letters

Students will learn the different purposes of emails, memos and letters, as well as the various elements of each. As part of the coursework, you will create samples of each for practice and review.

What Levels of Courses Are Offered?

Online business communication courses may be offered as part of a certificate program in management or business administration. They can also be applied toward an Associate of Arts and Sciences (AAS) degree, which is a broad-based degree that often transfers to a baccalaureate program. In some cases, business communications courses are also offered as personal interest courses; these may or may not count for credit.

How Do I Participate in Online Courses?

Online courses are generally self-paced, although assignments may still have specific due dates. After registering, you can log in and see the class syllabus, lectures and assignments. Lectures are usually in video or audio format and you can access them as often as you like. You may also need to purchase textbooks and complete reading assignments to supplement online materials.

You can submit your assignments online through e-mail or other online tools. Discussion boards or forums allow you to communicate with your classmates and teachers, asking and answering questions and commenting on the lectures. You will also complete tests online. Some courses provide the opportunity for you to apply what you're learning through online exercises.
