Online CPR Training Programs

Those wanting to learn CPR may be interested in signing up for an online CPR training program. Get information about the types of online programs being offered, the topics you'll study and what you'll need in order to enroll.

What Type of Online Training is Available?

Online CPR training programs are available for individuals interested in CPR certification, as well as healthcare professionals and companies who want to encourage their employees to enroll in CPR training. CPR recertification courses are also offered in online formats for those seeking recertification.

Although these CPR training programs are primarily conducted online, they are actually more similar to hybrid or blended programs. You will be able to complete the cognitive part of the class online, but you will eventually need to demonstrate your skills and knowledge to an American Heart Association (AHA) instructor and pass a hands-on test in order to receive your CPR certification card.

Online OptionsOnline programs for CPR certification and recertification are available but require an in-person test with an AHA instructor
Common CoursesFirst aid, life support, how to perform CPR on certain types of people, AED use, ventilation techniques

What Will I Learn in an Online CPR Training Program?

As a student enrolled in a CPR training program, you will learn basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to use respiratory equipment and automated external defibrillators (AED), oxygen administration and basic first aid. CPR course offerings vary from basic life support to Heartsaver CPR, which may or may not include first aid and AED instruction. With the use of mannequins, you will learn 1- and 2-person CPR, as well as how to perform CPR on infants and children. You will also practice effective ventilation techniques. Here are some potential online training courses you may take:

  • Basic life support
  • HeartCode basic life support
  • Heartsaver CPR with first aid and/or AED
  • Heartsaver CPR
  • Advanced life support
  • CPR recertification

Upon completion of an online CPR training program, you will have a working knowledge of CPR and basic life support techniques.

What Will I Need to Participate in an Online Program?

As an online student, you will need a computer with Internet access and an e-mail account. Coursework is typically delivered via audio and video files or Blackboard, a Web-based learning delivery method. You may be required to purchase specific textbooks or manuals. Most schools and providers require preregistration and payment of a training fee. Aside from these technological and textbook requirements, there are no prerequisites for an online CPR training program.

If you're taking CPR training for recertification, which is required every two years, you'll need to provide proof of current CPR certification. The CPR recertification course is not as in-depth as the CPR course. However, if you do not pass the skills test, you may be required to take the entire CPR class to become recertified.
