Online Certification for Registered Nurses (RN)

Several schools offer online certificate programs designed for registered nurses in a variety of concentrations, such as school nursing, neonatal nursing and clinical nursing. Read on for curriculum and certification information, and get career information, too.

Can I Complete Online Certification For Registered Nurses (RN)?

Many schools offer certification programs for RNs that you can complete online. Most of these programs are designed for registered nurses who already have professional experience as well as a master's degree in nursing. Certificate programs are offered in a wide array of concentrations, including school nursing, nurse midwifery and clinical nursing.

Depending on your concentration, you'll need to complete 10-36 credit hours of coursework to obtain your certificate. Some programs may require you to attend a few classes in person, but if you're far from campus some schools will waive this requirement. Nearly all certificate programs will require you to complete several hours of work in an internship or clinical work at a pre-approved site.

How Do Online Programs Work?

To get started in an online program, you will need a broadband Internet connection, as well as an updated browser, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer. Additionally, some schools may require you to have access to software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and QuickTime Player. Many schools upload course lectures as streaming video that you can watch over the Internet, and you'll be able to interact with classmates and instructors via e-mail or chat clients.

What Is The Curriculum Like?

The type of curriculum you'll have depends largely on your concentration. For example, if you're interested in a school nurse certificate program you'll take courses on topics such as perspectives in school health and school-nursing theories, in addition to completing a school nursing internship. A certificate in cardiometabolic nursing provides training in areas such as metabolic disturbances in older adults and diabetes management. In a forensic nursing program, you'll take classes such as forensic health care and medical evidence collection.

After Completing The Program, What Do I Need To Become Certified?

Certification policies and standards vary from state to state. First you'll need to make sure your program is accredited by the National League for Nursing. Some schools will also provide an endorsement for state certification for certain concentrations, including school nursing.

What Will This Credential Do For My Nursing Career?

According to a study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in May of 2018 RNs earned a median annual salary of $71,730 The BLS also projected that job opportunities for registered nurses will be excellent from 2016-2026, with nurse practitioners, child nurse specialists, nurse midwives and nurse anesthetists in the highest demand (www.bls.gov).
