What Do Orthopedic Technician Courses Cover?

Online courses in orthopedic technology are rare. The online classes that are available focus on correct pronunciation, spelling, use and meaning of medical terms. Human anatomy and physiology courses are also offered online. These teach you to identify parts of the human body, their functions and their locations.

Most courses are only available in-person. Through them, you will learn to identify fractures and broken bones. Through clinical experiences, you will work firsthand with doctors and nurses, completing various orthopedic procedures, such as applying, adjusting and removing casts.

At What Level Are Courses Offered?

Online orthopedic technology courses are most commonly available through undergraduate certificate programs. A certificate usually takes less than a year for full-time students to complete. Some schools also offer individual for-credit courses online. The programs are designed to prepare you for the certification exam given by the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists. Once you're certified, you can find positions at hospitals, doctor's offices or even rehabilitation clinics, where you might teach patients to walk with a newly fitted cane or crutch.

What Are the Prerequisites?

To be eligible for a certificate program in orthopedic technology, you must have a high school diploma or the GED equivalent. Some programs require that you have a tuberculosis test done and have CPR certification. Before you are accepted into a program, the school may also run a background check on you.

How Do Courses Work?

Most orthopedic technology courses are not available online, but can only be taken on-campus. These include clinical experiences, which can only be completed at facilities approved by the school, where you gain practical experience working with patients and assisting physicians. Orthopedic technology courses that are available online or through distance learning have scheduled dates and times. For online courses, some schools require that you are available online so you can interact with your professors and classmates or ask questions about procedures. Some courses use CDs to teach the pronunciation of different medical terms.

Medical Terminology

A medical terminology course covers the proper use, spelling, pronunciation, and meaning of medical terms. Medical terminology classes aim to improve medical communication between technician and health care practitioner.

Orthopedic Anatomy and Physiology

An online course in Anatomy and Physiology will cover the basic functions of the 11 organ systems and how these systems work together. The courses will spend a majority of the time on the muscular and skeletal systems as these are often the affected systems treated in an orthopedic office.

Basic Radiology

Online radiology courses discuss viewing and interpreting basic imaging, including radiographs, MRI, and ultrasound. After completion of the basic radiology course students will also be able to describe fractures as seen on radiographs.

Online Casting and Splinting

Casting and splinting courses discuss the proper steps to cast and splint orthopedic injuries. Other topics these classes often include are complications associated with casting or splinting an injury.

Sterile Technique

An online class covering sterile techniques covers the cleaning and preparation of medical instruments. The class prepares students to also keep a sterile environment for the patient to avoid infections and assist in orthopedic procedures.
