What Will I Learn in Online Radiography Courses?

Radiography uses a variety of imaging technologies, such as x-rays, CT scans, MRIs and CAT scans to diagnose and treat bone damage, tumors, dental problems and heart ailments. Although you can learn the basics of the radiologic technician profession online, an externship is often required to give you hands-on experience in radiography. The following courses may be required:

Anatomy and Physiology

Students will explore the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems of the human body. Histology, chemistry and cytology of the human anatomy will also be considered.

Principles of Management in Imaging

In this course, students will study the various responsibilities of the imaging professional. Topics include patient engagement, emotional intelligence, coaching and mentoring.

Medical Imaging

Students will cover picture archiving and communicating systems (PACS). Networking, direct digital radiography, and computed radiography will also be addressed.

Technical Writing in Healthcare

This course will focus on the important aspects of strong professional writing skills. Main topics include writing case notes, proposals and reports.

Legal Aspects of Healthcare

Students will be introduced to personnel law, contract law and the relationship of for-profit and non-profit organizations with governmental and non-governmental organizations. Emphasis will be placed on current topics in developing areas of the law and social responsibility of healthcare managers.

What Degree Levels are Available?

You can earn an online associate's degree with a radiography track. You would then be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam. Topics in an associate's degree program may include anatomy and physiology, radiation physics, radiography and methods of patient care. Such degree programs can be completed in as little as one year; some prior radiography education may be required.

An online bachelor's degree program usually includes both radiography skills and business skills. The focus is on radiography skills and practices, but you'll also learn healthcare administration skills. Such programs are designed for registered imaging professionals.

You can also earn a master's degree online. This program often prepares you for a career in both radiography practice and research. You must be certified by the ARRT and have an undergraduate degree to qualify for such programs. Although coursework is taken online, you typically must complete an internship in a radiography clinical setting.

What Technology Will I Need to Take an Online Course?

Online courses require a connection to the internet, a supported internet browser, and minimum levels for operating systems and monitor resolution. Some courses require a sound card, word processing software, and plug-ins such as Flash Player and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Certain classes may necessitate the purchase of additional materials and software.
