Can I Earn a Degree in Dental Administration?

At some schools, the subject of dental administration is addressed as dental office management. Aspects of dental office management may be covered in one or more courses as components of a program leading to an Associate in Science in Dental Assisting Technology and Management. In general, these programs are only available on campus.

Online and hybrid programs are available at community colleges, technical schools and universities. These programs typically lead to an Administrative Dental Assistant Certificate or a Diploma in Medical Office Systems. Some schools offer their programs via a commercial career training company, such as Education To Go (also known as ed2go).

Are There any Prerequisites?

To qualify for admission at many schools you'll have to undergo a police background check, and have no record of committing any crimes against persons. You'll be expected to have command of English grammar and punctuation. Since your duties as an administrator are largely clerical, you'll need to be proficient in keyboarding. All schools require you to be familiar with a word-processing computer program. Microsoft Word is the standard system used. Prior dental office work experience is not necessary.

What Courses Will I Take and What Will I Learn?

The desired outcome of all dental assistant administrator programs is to enable you not only to perform clerical administrative duties, but to assist with patient care as well. You'll learn to facilitate communication and relations between patients, dentists and insurance companies to assure smooth and efficient delivery of dental healthcare.

Programs generally include a course in dental basics. This usually encompasses dental terminology and anatomy, as well as instruction to familiarize you with dental procedures. There is a course in interpersonal communications, which includes areas such as telephone skills, written and oral correspondence, patient relations and how to communicate with other members of a dental health team. Another important aspect of patient communication that's covered is how to set up and operate an effective scheduling and recall system.

Records management courses include overseeing and maintaining the clinical records of patients, as well as maintaining effective accounts payable, accounts receivable and collection procedures. You'll become familiar with American Dental Association (ADA) codes as they're used in claims and billing procedures.

There may be a course in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as it pertains to patient confidentiality in dental offices. Some programs also include instruction in signs, symptoms, transmission and exposure prevention of Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). These subjects are often coupled with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) instruction.
