Online Engineering Courses

Engineering courses are available online and cover everything from the basics to specific issues that engineers are dealing with today. Learn about what is covered in online engineering classes and what to expect from an online course.

What Topics Can I Study in Online Engineering Courses?

Online courses in engineering are available through undergraduate and graduate degree programs. These courses are offered in almost every field of engineering, including computer engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering and nuclear engineering.

Some courses will familiarize you with different worldwide challenges, providing you with the opportunity to come up with solutions, while others may present more of the basic engineering concepts. Below are details related to some types of online engineering classes:

Mechanics of Materials

In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of how the application of stress and strain affect engineering materials. Theories of deformation, buckling and failure will be studied.

Polymer Science

This class offers an overview of polymeric materials and science. Topics covered can include polymer synthesis and structure and process conditions such as gas phase and emulsion.

Automata and Computability

Computing models dating back to antiquity will be assessed and compared. Other topics covered may be parsing, P vs. non-P, NP-completeness and quantum computing.

Fluid Dynamics

The fundamental concepts that govern fluid dynamics, ranging from pressure and buoyancy to lift and drag and internal and external flows, will be examined. Students will create models and equations that will assist with problem-solving in the real world.

Nuclear Materials

How materials react in nuclear systems is the focus of this class. You will be taught radiation effects and damage and how to develop diagrams and methods to calculate these effects.

How Do Online Courses Work?

After registering for an online course, you select the lesson to access the lecture, lecture notes and class assignments. Lectures are usually available on demand in video format, with some text annotations. You can take courses whenever you'd like and review them at any time. Other courses are streamlined to your computer via webcam, so you can watch them live or review them later.

In some courses, you may have the opportunity to interact with your classmates and professors online, using Web chat or discussion boards. Each lesson has assignments, quizzes and tests, which must be completed by certain due dates. Generally, tests are completed online, while some programs require pencil-and-paper exams administered by a proctor.
