Online Graduate Accounting Courses

If you desire to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, graduate accounting coursework can help you prepare for the exam, and you can earn the credit-hours needed to sit for it. Read on for more details, including how online courses are offered.

Are Online Graduate Accounting Courses Available?

A master's degree in accounting is offered by several schools through distance-learning. Most students working on graduate accounting courses are entering the accounting field or preparing for the CPA exam or both. To apply for the CPA exam, you must have 150 credit hours; however, a typical bachelor's degree only consists of 120 credit hours. Graduate accounting programs, therefore, can give you the additional required credit hours. The following are examples of the types of courses you can expect to take in a master's degree program.

Advanced Auditing

Students learn what to do when audits have failed, how to assess risk, and ethical issues for auditors. Learning techniques for this course may include case studies, current research reviews, and presentations.

Accounting for Non-Profits and Governments

Students will learn how to apply their knowledge in budgeting, financial reporting, and accounting for the governmental and non-profit sectors. Students will learn how to apply governmental accounting standards.

Forensic and Fraud Accounting

In a course on fraud, students may learn about the use of information technology and how to assess the risks of financial fraud. Other course topics may include the misappropriation of assets, income smoothing, and financial statement fraud. Students will be prepared to discover and investigate fraud.

Accounting Ethics

Students will learn about the codes of ethical conduct, U.S. regulations, and auditor independence. The course will also include information about how to handle ethical situations that students may encounter as professionals in the field.

Corporate Financial Accounting

Students will learn about finances from the position of corporations. Advanced topics are discussed such as debt policy, corporate governance, investments, and financial markets. Students may have the opportunity to assess risk and changes to stakeholder values.

How Do I Take an Online Course?

In an online course, as in an on-campus course, you are required to purchase all of the required course materials, such as textbooks and workbooks. You need a personal computer with a high-speed Internet connection and a Web browser. Some classes may require the additional purchase or download of software necessary to complete the course. Some instructors may evaluate your online participation in the class through discussion board postings. A valid e-mail account, a current operating system and a functioning printer are also needed.
