Online Home Health Aide Classes and Schools

Read about online training programs for aspiring home health aides and find out what clinical coursework you'd need to complete in person. Check the prerequisites for enrollment and explore what you'd learn as a home health aide student. Find out how online programs work.

What You Need to Know

By enrolling in online home health aide classes, you'll be taking the first step on the road to studying human development, body systems and disorders, effective communication and how to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. You'll also learn how to bathe and dress your patients, prepare meals for them, take care of their laundry and housekeeping, go shopping for them, and other related tasks. Your courses could also prepare you to take the Home Care Aide Certification - NAHC exam.

Course Options Home care procedures, nutrition, body systems and medication, law, ethics and confidentiality
Training CMA and CNA certified, healthcare training classes
Licensing CNA card

How Do I Access Online Courses?

You'll be expected to participate in live chat sessions, discussions and other interactive activities. You'll need to complete assignments and exams online and make sure that you submit them on time. You might even need to use an electronic video library, so you'll need to make sure your computer can play videos, in addition to chat sessions and all other interactive tools. You should have a high-speed Internet connection to access course content and materials. The following list contains some of the schools that make these classes available to you:

  • Hutchinson Community College
  • Penn Foster Career School
  • Northwest Technical College

Will I Be Required to Complete Clinical Training?

For some programs, you'll be required to complete a clinical component at a healthcare facility. You'll most likely be instructed by licensed or certified healthcare professionals. You'll probably be responsible for finding a clinical training site. You should discuss all requirements for the clinical component with an admissions advisor prior to enrolling.

This hands-on training will allow you to put into practice the skills you learn during the online portion of your program, where you might cover the following course topics:

  • Communication skills
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Medication administration
  • Law and ethics
  • Meeting the needs of clients
  • Nutrition
  • Home care procedures

What Requirements Will I Need to Meet?

You'll most likely need to have a certified nursing assistant (CNA) certificate and present a copy of your CNA card on the first day of class. You might also need to take a reading test at a specified location. You may also be required to enroll in person at select sites, so it may be necessary to live close to the school you plan on attending. Enrollment and testing sites could include the school itself, a local education center or another approved location.
