Online Human Services Degrees

Human services professionals work directly with people to help them deal with and solve problems. Learn about what types of human services programs are offered online, what topics are covered, how online programs work and explore possible career options with your degree. Schools offering Human Services degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Types of Human Services Programs Can I Find Online?

Many schools offer human services degree programs at the associate's, bachelor's and master's degree levels through distance learning. Programs are often hybrid, combining didactic courses with required on-campus components or clinical training. You may be allowed to complete your on-site visits on the weekend or during the summer.

The degree you pursue will depend on your career aspirations. For instance, an associate's degree in human services may qualify you for an entry-level position as a human service assistant, while a career as a social worker may require a bachelor's or master's degree. Although you may find online human service doctoral degree programs, they're not common.

  • Alcohol and drug abuse
  • Effects of family and culture on individuals
  • Developmental disabilities

As a bachelor's or master's degree student, you may focus your studies on your area of interest, which may include social work, substance abuse counseling or mental health care. • Communication skills
  • Abnormal behavior
  • Assessment
  • Human services management
  • Intervention approaches

How Do Online Programs Work?

Online programs provide you with the same level of education you'd find in an on-campus program. Courses are delivered in various methods, including Internet-based course management systems, such as Blackboard or Angel. Although you can learn at your own pace, you're required to complete assignments and tests by specific deadlines. Programs that aren't 100% online require you to spend some time on campus or at an approved clinical site.

What Can I Do With My Degree?

Earning a degree in human services can prepare you for various career opportunities, depending on your level of study and experience. An associate's degree program can prepare you for possible jobs, such as mental health assistant, counselor, case manager or social service aide. You can also transfer to a university, where you can pursue a bachelor's or master's degree.

You need at least a bachelor's degree if your goal is to become a social worker or human services supervisor. You're required to obtain a state license in order to become a clinical social worker.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), human service assistants were expected to see an employment growth of 16% from 2016-2026. Public health social workers could also expect a job increase, stated the BLS.
