Online Instruction Tools: ReadyMade Reviewed

The Education Techie writes about tech tools that can help students and teachers. This week, the Techie is taking a look at online instruction tools. Today, we'll talk about ReadyMade. Schools offering Instructional Design degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Is It?

ReadyMade is a print magazine that also has a useful website. Like the magazine, the site focuses on DIY projects that are typically of a more domestic nature. Instructions can be found on ReadyMade's site in both the blog and projects sections. The blog section touches on a variety of topics, occasionally including instructions for doing stuff like making a beaded necklace, whipping up your own homemade vegan coconut ice cream, starting a book club and giving a brand-new t-shirt a vintage look. These instructional posts are interspersed with posts about things like cool home decor and how to grow vegetables without a yard.

The ReadyMade blog is a fun read, but if you're looking for something more straightforwardly instructional, head over the projects section. There, you'll find instructions in the following categories: technology and work, travel and places, home and garden, fashion and style, food and entertaining, design, craft and culture. The instructions cover a wide range of projects, though that range isn't quite as wide as it is on some of the other instruction sites I looked at for this series. But you can see every step and every photo included in the tutorials for free, which is definitely a plus.

Many of the projects have been posted by ReadyMade staff, though you can submit your own as well. I looked at quite a few of the instructions, and overall I found them very straightforward. The layout of the instructions is easy to follow, and most are accompanied by ratings for how difficult and time consuming they are. Projects I looked at include a DIY hammock that is rated 'easy' and takes less than an hour to make, a dining table built out of recycled wood, plant pots made of concrete and a simple salad with ginger dressing.

Who Will Find It Most Useful?

ReadyMade seems best suited for a young adult crowd with some craftiness and style. Though there are projects that are clearly intended for homes with kids, such as a magnetic wall giraffe decoration, I didn't see any projects that looked like something a kid would be terribly interested in doing unsupervised. And since the projects typically have a more domestic, DIY spin, this probably isn't going to be a favorite site of people who'd rather buy something than make it themselves.

The domestic, DIY aspect of ReadyMade will help make it more of a self-selecting source for instructions. While Instructables seems to have a little of something for everyone, ReadyMade is definitely targeted at a specific audience, and the instructions reflect that. Even the technology and work section focuses more on stylish or decorative items. Still, there are some really practical bits of educational content here. For example, you can learn how to wire a lamp or make screenprints.

If you're a crafty sort who's into DIY and recycling - there are a lot of 'turn a door into a table' type projects - you should definitely check out the ReadyMade website. If you just can't get enough of the projects, you can subscribe to the magazine and get new instructions for projects every month.

This is the third article in the Education Techie's series about online instruction tools. Previously, the Education Techie talked about Instructables and TeacherTube. Stay tuned for more articles this week!
