Online Kitchen Design Courses and Certificate Programs

Learn about the career benefits associated with online kitchen design courses and certificate programs. Keep reading for more information on professional certifications, training topics and related online programs.

What You Need to Know

Kitchen design programs tend to be offered partially online and often culminate with an in-person internship for a kitchen design company. Other programs may require that you construct a portfolio of your kitchen designs.

Programs Certificate programs in kitchen and bath design or interior design; associate's degree in kitchen and bath design
Courses Materials and estimation, lighting, kitchen themes, reading construction documents
Online Certificate and associate's degree programs available partially online; in-person internships are often required

What Topics Will I Study?

In an online kitchen design or interior design certificate program, you may find yourself learning about computer-aided design (CAD) or hand drafting and how both design types can assist you with your designs. Course topics also cover the following areas of interest:

  • Working with space constraints
  • Building codes
  • Kitchen and bath mechanical systems
  • Kitchen and bath lighting
  • Materials and cost estimating
  • Addressing clients' needs

What Type of Certificate Programs Can I Find?

Depending on your desired area of interest, you can find a certificate program that suits your learning needs. Options include a Kitchen and Bath Design Certificate or Career Studies Certificate. These programs require between 26 and 30 credit hours and conclude with an internship. You can complete this curriculum on a full- or part-time basis and combine online classes with campus-based instruction if you choose.

If you're interested in a more general course of study, you could opt to enroll in a Basic Interior Design Certificate program.

What Other Types of Online Programs are Available?

If you're seeking degree programs that incorporate kitchen design into their curricula, Associate of Science in Kitchen and Bath Design programs are available either as an online or on-campus option. These programs include courses on color and lighting, spatial planning, interior design and CAD. As with a certificate program, associate's degree programs may require you to complete an internship to assist with building your portfolio. Once you have an associate's degree, you may be able to find a career as a kitchen planner, kitchen sales consultant or draftsperson.

What Happens After I Graduate?

Once you graduate from a certificate program and have two years of experience working in the industry, you may choose to take the national certification exam, which is administered by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). The NKBA includes more than 40,000 professionals and has four types of certification. The lowest level of certification is the Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer (AKBD), and you can attain higher levels of certification with additional experience and higher learning.
