What Kind of Courses Will I Take?

All the courses you'll take are geared toward ultimately qualifying you for a job as a music producer. A bachelor's degree program will give you well-rounded preparation in multiple aspects of the discipline; you'll be capable of guiding a project from start to finish. In addition to sound engineering, you'll take instruction in such areas as music theory, composition and marketing.

Courses in basic music production will teach you how to apply traditional techniques to the modern era using digital audio technology. You'll receive classes in note theory and harmony. Ear training, or critical listening classes, will teach you how to technically and aesthetically differentiate right from wrong in a recording session. You'll learn the language of the industry, allowing you to communicate ideas or decisions quickly and concisely.

Online courses often explore different types of music production software, like Pro Tools, Logic Pro, SONAR, Reason, Ableton Live and Cubase. All of these tools are used to effectively sequence, mix, master, loop, sample and enhance a musical production. They can also be used to apply audio to visual media.

What Careers are Available?

Chances are you won't begin your working life in the recording industry as a producer. A good deal of preparation for that position occurs through internships and on-the-job training.

You may start out as a recording engineer or sound engineering technician. Duties in these positions can range from setting up, adjusting and testing studio equipment to consulting with an artist or producer about the overall nature of the project. You may be required to do some synchronizing, mixing and editing of recordings or live productions.

If you find work as a live sound engineer, you'll preside over the sound check prior to a live performance and operate audio equipment during the show. Standard pieces of equipment include mixing boards, speakers, monitors and audio processing units.

Artist management companies often are a good source of access to the industry. You might land a job as an artist's representative or agent, in which you'll deal directly with producers and engineers in recording studios.

A production assistant is often a producer's go-to person, like an executive assistant in the business world. You'll handle details that are important to the success of a recording project. These might include communicating with all participants, scheduling studio time, sending e-mails or assisting with equipment set-up and breakdown.

A music producer is like the director of a film. Although some recordings use individual producers for each song, it's more common for a single producer to be in charge of an entire recording. As a producer, you'll often select songs, decide on instrumentation, choose appropriate rhythms and determine the song sequence of an album. After consulting and working with an artist, the music producer makes the final decision on the shape and presentation of a recording.

Online music production programs are available at the undergraduate and graduate degree levels. Certificate programs are also an option.
