Online Notetaking Tools: Evernote Reviewed

Each week, the Education Techie reviews tech tools that can help students and teachers. This week, the Techie is reviewing notetaking tools. Today's review: Evernote. Schools offering Paralegal degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Is It?

This program allows users to save and tag text, audio and video notes - and save pictures and websites. Notes can be searched by keyword, title and tag. You can even search printed or written text in photos and other images that you save. Evernote operates across multiple platforms, including computers, mobile devices and the Web. Users get a single account username and password that allows them to access the same account information on each platform they use. You can use Evernote for free, or sign up for a premium account for $5 a month or $45 a year.

There are a lot of different ways to save notes with this program. You can install an Evernote button in your Web browser to save websites and articles. Users also get a unique email address so they can email notes directly to their accounts. It's even possible to save tweets by following Evernote on Twitter, and you can import information from other programs, like Google Notebook.

What Makes It Cool?

This is one of the most versatile notetaking tools that I reviewed. Evernote allows you to sync your notes in every platform that you use, so you don't need to individually update each one. Mobile apps are available for a variety of devices, and the computer software is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. I use a Mac, and one cool feature the desktop version of the program offered is integration with my iSight camera.

Another plus for Evernote is the fact that you can integrate a variety of apps and hardware with the program. These options are split into categories that include mobile apps, desktop software and hardware. Certain hardware devices, like specific scanners, can be synced with the program to allow direct transfer of images. You can even get an app that will allow you to add recipes to your account.

What Are Its Drawbacks?

Evernote does not offer unlimited uploads. Users with free accounts can only upload 60 total megabytes of content each month. Premium users may upload up to 1 GB of content per month. There is no limit to how much content you can store on Evernote's servers, though, so if your usage doesn't exceed these upload limits, you won't run into any problems.

Where Can I Find It?

This is the second in a series of reviews of notetaking tools. Previously, the Techie reviewed MyNoteIt. The Education Techie will continue to review notetaking tools this next week.
