Online Notetaking Tools: Ubernote Reviewed

Each week, the Education Techie reviews tech tools that can help students and teachers. This week, the Techie is reviewing notetaking tools. Today's review: UberNote. Schools offering Paralegal degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Is It?

This notetaking program is available on a variety of platforms, including mobile devices. UberNote is an Internet application, and there are no downloads. You can use it to make lists, maintain contacts, update calendars and keep track of online articles and bookmarks.

The program offers a variety of methods for saving information to your account, including IM, a Web browser toolbar, bookmarking capabilities and a unique email address. You can tag each of your notes and other items, and search by tag. It's also possible to share your notes with other users, and any user can comment on shared notes. Notes are private unless you choose to share them.

UberNote is available for free, or you can sign up as a supporter for $29 a year. The difference between supporter membership and a basic account seems negligible; based on the company's description, the only two perks for supporters are an ad-free experience and SSL security encryption. When I wrote this post, a premium membership was stated to be in the works. This premium membership would include many more features than current user options, including separate files for notes, file management and voice transcription. UberNote offers unlimited uploads to all users.

What Makes It Cool?

This program does a good job at achieving versatility without becoming too complex. Users have a lot of options and can use the program for something as simple as keeping track of online research. The option also exists to use the program for much more. This isn't the most complex and far-reaching notetaking program that I researched this week, but I think that might make it all the more appealing for some users.

Another benefit of UberNote is that the site is very thorough in introducing new users to its features. There are a variety of help sections, including a guided tour and FAQs. You can also email suggestions to the program developers if you think a specific feature should be added.

What Are Its Drawbacks?

Like some of the other more complex and versatile notetaking tools I looked at, this may be more than some students want. It isn't designed specifically for educational applications, though I think it could easily be used as such. Still, some users might not use a lot of the features that are available.

Where Can I Find It?

This is the third in a series of reviews of notetaking tools. Previously, the Techie reviewed MyNoteIt and Evernote. The Education Techie will continue to review notetaking tools this week.
