Online Notetaking Tools: Zoho Notebook Reviewed

Each week, the Education Techie reviews tech tools that can help students and teachers. This week, the Techie is reviewing notetaking tools. Today's review: Zoho Notebook. Schools offering Paralegal degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Is It?

Zoho Notebook is part of an online application suite that includes a word processor, chat service and other applications. As an individual, you can get a free Zoho account, which gives you access to all of the program's tools. Paid plans are available for businesses and organizations featuring multiple users. Zoho has a special website you can access using portable electronic devices, but no mobile apps.

Notebook features a single pane with toolbars and a sidebar that shows the notes you've saved to your account. Notes are organized into notebooks, which can have multiple pages. It's possible to share entire notebooks with other users, or keep them private for your own use. Users can add images, video and audio to their notes. There are also some drawing tools that can allow you to add shapes, lines and freehand drawings to your notes.

What Makes It Cool?

The Notebook application is one of Zoho's many functions, and it's possible for individuals to use those other functions in collaboration with the notetaking tool. For example, if you create image slides in Zoho Show, you can add them to a notebook. You can also use Zoho chat with other users while writing in a notebook, allowing for collaboration through the same application. I also like the fact that individual users don't have to pay for the service.

This combination of assets can make Zoho Notebook a good choice for students. Individuals signing up for an account in order to use Notebook may find educational uses for the program's other applications.

What Are Its Drawbacks?

I found this application's interface somewhat confusing. There is a help section that provides an explanation of how to use the program, so this confusion didn't prevent me from being able to use the program. There was something of a learning curve with Zoho Notebook - more so than any of the other notetaking programs I reviewed - but I don't think this will be a boundary for all users. Those who are less tech savvy will probably prefer a program with more streamlined, user-friendly controls, but I think Zoho Notebook's assets outweigh this particular drawback.

Where Can I Find It?
