What Are the Prerequisites for a Nurse Anesthesia Program?

Nurse anesthesia is one of the four main fields of advanced practice nursing. In order to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), you will need to obtain a master's degree. Master's degrees in nurse anesthesia are available from a number of schools and prepare you to take the Council of Certification of Nurse Anesthetists certification exam.

In order to apply to a master's degree program in this field, you will need to have a bachelor's degree in nursing and have taken courses in statistics and research. You must also have a current registered nurse (RN) license. You will also need to submit GRE scores, letters of recommendation and a personal statement. Most programs also require professional experience as a nurse.

Can Programs Be Completed Entirely Online?

Due to the practical and clinical nature of these programs, they are not offered entirely online. However, many schools offer students the opportunity to complete a portion of their coursework - such as general science classes - online. In some cases, classes may not be offered entirely online, but may have an online component. All programs require that clinical experience be completed in person at an approved site.
