Online OBGYN Courses

Online OBGYN courses cover topics relating to women's health. Read on to learn about what online OBGYN courses cover, what the prerequisites for these courses are and how online classes work. Schools offering Health Science degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Do Online OBGYN Courses Cover?

The majority of OBGYN courses are not offered online because they involve advanced medical school subjects that require practical, hands-on, clinical training; however, some medical schools provide OBGYN lectures via the Internet to complement clinical experiences with theoretical knowledge. Topics covered include infertility and infertility treatments. You can also learn about topics related to pregnancy, including labor and delivery, psychological effects of pregnancy, postpartum depression and miscarriage. Other topics covered include the following:

  • Menopause
  • Pelvic pain
  • Cervical cancer screening
  • Sexual dysfunction in women
  • Sexual assault victim treatment
  • Uterine bleeding
  • Lactation
  • Fetal monitoring

Who Can Take These Courses?

OBGYN courses are not widely available and only intended for students who are in their third for fourth years of medical school. Furthermore, entire courses are not offered online - only the lecture portions are. You must complete the rest of the courses in person, at a hospital, clinic or women's care facility. At a minimum, acceptance to medical school requires specific undergraduate science and math coursework, a high undergraduate GPA and a minimum score on the MCAT.

How Do Online Courses Work?

The online portions of OBGYN classes can be completed by combining text book readings with online video lectures and narrated Power Point presentations. These materials are accessible around the clock by medical students, so they can squeeze them in around your busy work, family and clinical schedules. You are expected to complete assignments and clinical experiences for each lecture. Assignments other than clinical experiences include inpatient and outpatient workups, research papers, presentations and readings. Tests are also required for the courses and can be completed either after you complete lessons or at the end of certain clinical experiences, as determined by the professor. Such evaluations typically require hands-on demonstrations.
