What Will I Study?

With either program, you'll learn skills to help keep an office running smoothly. During a certificate program in office administration, you'll study such topics as word processing, records management, meeting planning and customer service. You'll also develop computer skills during classes in computer applications, keyboarding and Windows basics.

Associate's-level courses focus on advancing your basic office skills. You'll study macroeconomics, accounting, public speaking, communication skills and database management. You'll also become familiar with basic office machinery and Microsoft Office software like Word and Excel. Programs specific to medical office administration will cover topics like medical law and ethics, medical transcription and medical terminology. You'll also learn about various systems used to maintain medical records.

What About Continuing My Education?

If you are considering an online degree in office administration beyond the associate's level, you have two choices. You may pursue a bachelor's degree in a specialty like legal office administration or medical office administration. Or, you may consider changing your focus to business administration. Bachelor's degrees in this field prepare you to work in administration and management in retail and other businesses. After earning your bachelor's degree, you can continue your education with a master's degree or doctoral degree program in business administration - both of which can be completed online.

What Careers Can I Consider?

Upon completion of your certificate or associate's degree, you'll be ready to work in a number of offices, including medical, legal and administrative offices. You'll be prepared for secretarial and entry-level administrative assistant positions. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2018, executive secretaries and executive administrative assistants made a yearly average of $61,550 (www.bls.gov). The top five paying states for this career were New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, California, and the District of Columbia.
