How Do Online Programs Work?

Online programs require you to have a computer with Internet access and an e-mail address. Your courses may be delivered through e-mail, CD-ROM or a course delivery system, such as Angel or Blackboard. If you need assistance, instructors can provide online support via e-mail or online conferencing. The learning materials you'll need may be supplied by your program.

Although online programs allow you to learn at your own pace, you may be required to log in at certain times to retrieve e-mails, turn in assignments or participate in online discussions. You may also have a deadline for finishing the program, but most can be completed within six months. Some programs require you to maintain a grade of C or better in your courses.

What Does Registration and Certification Entail?

Most states require you to be registered with the state board of pharmacy, but national certification is voluntary in most states and required by some employers. Requirements vary by state, but many states only require you to have a high school diploma or GED to register as a pharmacy technician.

Certification requires you to pass an exam through the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) or the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). To be eligible for the exam, you must be a high school graduate or have completed an equivalent program. Successfully completing the certification exam will give you the title of certified pharmacy technician (CPhT). You'll need to be recertified every two years, which requires 20 hours of continuing education.

What Can I Expect With This Career?

Pharmacy technicians can be employed in a variety of settings, including mail-order and retail pharmacies, medical centers and nursing homes. As a pharmacy tech, you'll assist patients with their prescription needs and perform such duties as providing customer service, receiving prescription orders, verifying customer information and handling insurance claims. You'll have the training to fill prescriptions, including counting, weighing and mixing medications and affixing labels on bottles. Upon approval of a pharmacist, you will give prescriptions to customers.

The employment outlook for pharmacy technicians is good, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS); job opportunities are expected to increase up to 9% from 2014 to 2024. The increase in duties performed by pharmacy technicians contributes to the employment growth. Certified pharmacy techs generally have increased job opportunities and higher salaries.
