Are There Degree Programs Available at Public Health Colleges?

There are a large number of universities that offer programs and courses leading to undergraduate degrees, graduate certificates and graduate degrees in public health. It's a good idea to pursue courses in a program or at a school that is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) of the American Public Health Association (APHA).

In order to be accredited, a school must offer a Master in Public Health (MPH) in one of the five recognized core areas of public health and must also have a doctoral program. This differs from an individual program's accreditation. A program can earn accreditation by offering a master's degree in only one of the core areas. The CEPH offers a list of schools and programs that have received accreditation (

Can I Earn a Degree Online?

The CEPH maintains a register of accredited schools that offer MPH degree programs that are conducted entirely online. Depending on the school, online programs may be either self-paced or have a specific timetable. Online programs are delivered over the Internet by using such course management systems as Blackboard or Centra.

The CEPH further notes that their online accreditation list is not all-inclusive. Omitted are accredited schools offering hybrid programs. These are programs that call for an on-campus orientation or certain in-person components in addition to online courses.

Although rare, there are some schools that offer an entirely online program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences with a public health concentration. There are also schools that offer online bachelor's degree completion programs. These programs are open to individuals who hold an associate's degree or have completed at least 60 hours of undergraduate study in a related field.

Many schools offer online continuing education courses in such fields as domestic violence healthcare, domestic violence mediation, school health nursing, infections and inflammations. Most schools also offer links to employment opportunities. Employment listings are also available online through the APHA State Public Health Associations (
