Online Resources for Educators: The Edublogger Reviewed

The Education Techie reviews technology that can help students and teachers. This week, the Techie is taking a look at some online resources for educators. Today's article focuses on The Edublogger. Schools offering Early Childhood Education degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Is It?

The Edublogger is focused on all kinds of technology that relates to education, but it has a particular focus on blogging. The content isn't always instructional in the sense that every post sets out to teach you something new. Some posts are dedicated to highlighting different blogs or events, but ultimately, everything is focused on education and technology. The layout of the site is more of a traditional blog format than some of the other online resources I looked at for this series. This means that it will be easy-to-use for pretty much all users, particularly those who are used to navigating around blogs.

Because the emphasis is on blogging, there are good step-by-step guides to setting up blogs for students and teachers. The guide for students is particularly interesting, in my opinion, since a lot of the other resources in this series focused mainly on setting up blogs for teachers. Incorporating this technology into the classroom presents some added challenges, since kids may already be blogging in their private time, and may relate to the activity in a way that isn't necessarily appropriate for the classroom. This guide tackles that aspect of the issue head-on, and includes a guide for teaching students commenting etiquette.

In addition to blogging, other topics covered include professional development and tech topics, like using Web tools for teaching. Some specific post topics include a detailed guide for teachers who want to use Facebook, a discussion of standardized testing and a list of resources to get more teachers using educational technology. Overall, the writing is good, and any instructions given are clear. Sometimes posts featuring instructions are accompanied by images that show you exactly what to do.

Who Will Get the Most Use Out of It?

If you're interested in starting your own education blog, you'll want to pay a visit to this site. It's a really great source of tips and tricks from how to attract traffic to adding widgets to your page. The added bonus of this particular site, though, is that it's hosted by Edublogs, an education-specific blog hosting service. This gives you an easy segue from reading Edublogger to setting up an Edublog account for yourself, your school or your students.

Since this particular resource is updated with relative frequency, it's a good source for those who are generally interested in education technology. If you're a frequent blog reader, you could add Edublogger to your RSS feed, subscribe to the e-mail feed or simply visit it whenever you get the desire to read about something new. Chances are there will be a new post or two for you to peruse. Because the tone of the site is focused on facilitating blogging, it is instructive and helpful, making it appropriate for users of all skill levels. Even advanced users are likely to find the news items relevant and interesting.

This is the second article in a series about online resources for educators. Previously, the Techie wrote about Integrating Technology. Stay tuned for more reviews this week!
