Can I Get a Degree in Restaurant Management?

Many restaurant chains have their own in-house management training programs. Generally, these programs teach you how things are done within that specific organization. Although many restaurant managers may gain their positions based on experience in the industry, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) suggests that a 2- or 4-year degree is increasingly preferred by employers (www.bls.gov). If you are already employed in restaurant management, you may want to take some professional development courses.

Several schools offer on-campus and online programs leading to certificates, associate's degrees or bachelor's degrees in restaurant management. Depending on the school, restaurant management may be referred to as hospitality management or culinary management. It may also be coupled with hotel management.

How Should I Choose a School?

A simple Internet search for hospitality management or restaurant management should yield a number of results. However, the National Restaurant Association provides a nationwide list of schools offering restaurant or hospitality programs (www.restaurant.org). The list shows which schools offer the National Restaurant Association's management curriculum, which could affect your choice if that ManageFirst program interests you. However, this list is not specific to online programs. Once you select a school, you can go to its website to find out if programs or courses are offered online.

What Courses Will I Take?

A certificate program in restaurant management consists of courses that will usually transfer toward an associate's degree or bachelor's degree. Typical courses include commercial food service operations, beverage production and service, food service systems and hospitality human resources management.

Associate's and bachelor's degree programs require you to complete a certain number of general education courses. These programs will also usually include an internship at a school-approved restaurant, hotel or food service operation near your home. Such degree programs are considered hybrids, conducted partially online, but with some in-person components.

Typical courses in an associate's degree program include food safety and sanitation, marketing, accounting, hospitality purchasing costs and management operations. A typical bachelor's degree program includes courses in beverage operations in compliance with local, state and federal regulations; hospitality information technology; restaurant and hospitality law; human resources and training operations; an overview of the hospitality industry; and catering.

Will I Need Certification?

Certification isn't required to work or advance in this field, but you might choose to pursue voluntary certification from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF). Professional certification attests to your competence and may enhance your possibilities for advancement. You can pursue ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification and ServSafe Alcohol Certification. In order to earn these certifications, you'll need to complete coursework and pass examinations.

Foodservice Management Professional (FMP) certification is also available from the NRAEF. This advanced certification requires you to have three years of industry experience, or two years and a degree, to sit for the qualifying exam. You must also have completed a series of courses in food management topics and have earned the association's Food Protection Manager Certification within the previous five years.

When looking to pursue a career in restaurant management, students have a few degree to choose from. Certificate, associate and bachelor programs are all available online, allowing more flexibility for students. All three of these degrees will prepare you to work in the field.
