  • Voice and language disorders
  • Motor speech disorders
  • Neurology for speech and language
  • Aphasia
  • Dysphagia

You'll probably also complete a thesis, practicum and externship in a master's degree program. Courses in the doctoral program could include qualitative research, statistical methods, ethics, social responsibility and leadership. You'll need to complete a dissertation also.

What's Required Before I Get Started?

At the certificate level, you probably need to have a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology or at least be an undergraduate senior; although, some programs may accept an associate's degree. At the master's level, you'll need a bachelor's degree, preferably in speech pathology. A bachelor's degree in any field will do as long as you complete the required coursework prior to beginning your studies. Some programs want you to have a background in sign language as well.

For the doctoral program, you'll most likely need to be a practicing speech-language pathologist. You might also be required to complete an online orientation course and a mandatory summer conference that includes applied workshops, face-to-face meetings and research courses. You may also get the chance to network with your classmates and their field associates.

You'll also need certain software and hardware to access your courses. Many online programs prefer that you have a high-speed Internet connection. You may also need Adobe Flash and Microsoft Word to view certain course content. A Universal Serial Bus (USB) headset and microphone, a sound card, speakers and an active e-mail account may be needed to communicate with your instructors and classmates.

What Factors Should I Consider When Selecting a College?

If you want to become a clinically certified speech-language pathologist, make sure the program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology and that it meets the standards set forth by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Once you obtain your master's degree, you can apply for professional certification through ASHA. While ASHA certification is not required, it offers many benefits, including career advancement, increased employment opportunities and professional credibility. An examination and clinical experience are also required for certification.
